Wife of ex-minister in hospital after taking overdose in prison

Viki Stamati, the wife of former Defense Minister Akis Tsochadzopoulos, allegedly attempted to take her own life in Korydallos Prison in Piraeus by taking a large dose of sleeping pills.

Stamati is serving a 12-year sentence in connection to her husband’s laundering of money taken in kickbacks for defense contracts.

Her lawyers said that she took the overdose after learning that she was due to be transferred to a correctional facility in Thiva, about 50 kilometers northwest of Athens.

Stamati is under observation at an Athens hospital and is considered to be out of danger.
