Greek government reacts to Mandela’s death
The Greek government on Friday reacted to the death of South African anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela describing him as a symbol of “the universal struggle against racism and xenophobia.”
“Nelson Mandela had the privilege of entering the realm of global history many years ago as a figure emblematic of the universal struggle against racism and xenophobia; as a symbol of the ongoing struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom,” a statement by the Foreign Ministry said Friday.
“All humanity bids him farewell at a time when, unfortunately, many of the attainments of democratic political culture are being called into question. Let us hope that his name and his image will always serve as point of reference with substantial institutional and social content,” the statement said.
