Works disrupt central Athens

Works on parts of major streets in central Athens, including Ermou, Athinas and Mitropoleos, started yesterday and are to hinder pedestrians and motorists over the next 9 months. The pedestrianization of Ermou Street between Aghion Asomaton and Pireos streets is to form part of a «great walk» through the city center, starting from the Panathanaic Stadium and culminating in the district of Gazi. Meanwhile works are under way to resurface Athinas Street and the sidewalks on Mitropoleos, Kolokotroni, and Aiolou streets. A total budget of 3.5 million euros is to go toward the Ermou Street facelift, which includes the construction of a square at the entrance to the Kerameikos Museum and a 14-hectare leisure park within the Kerameikos archaeological site. «The inconvenience is temporary but the project is permanent,» according to the firm responsible for the unification of the capital’s archaeological sites, which is supervising the works – scheduled for completion by April 2004.
