Kalamata hospital warns of serious staff shortages
Only emergency surgeries will be carried out as of Monday at the general hospital of Kalamata, which serves most of the Messinia region’s population of around 160,000 in the southern Peloponnese, the head of the association representing the region’s hospital doctors warned on Tuesday, citing a shortage of anesthesiologists.
“Right now we have just three anesthesiologists and they will not be performing regular surgeries for safety reasons,” Manolis Makaris told the state-run Athens-Macedonia New Agency.
Makaris added that Kalamata Hospital faces overall staff shortages reaching 35 percent of the required number. The hospital does no have a gastroenterologist and is short of pathologists as well, he said, calling for new hirings to be approved.
The head doctor also said that the hospital at Kyparissia, northwest of Kalamata, has been left without a cardiologist, necessitating one from Kalamata to make the trip once a week to check on patients there.
