Liberian tanker runs aground off island of Syros

Coast Guard officers on Friday were overseeing efforts to tow to shore a Liberian-flagged tanker which ran aground on the Cycladic island of Syros late on Thursday while no injuries were said to have been sustained by the vessel’s 23-man crew.

The Aliakmon ran aground about 1.5 nautical miles off the island’s southeastern coastline, according to local reports. Divers established that the collision had caused no serious damage to the vessel and there was no indication of marine pollution, reports said.
