Police pelted with oranges during farmers’ protest

Police were pelted with oranges during a protest by farmers in central Athens, reports said Friday.

Farmers, protesting against the government’s new Single Property Tax, reportedly threw the oranges after police tried to stop a free hand-out of agricultural products.

Lawmakers were on Friday voting on a contentious draft bill that foresees higher taxes on farmers.

The conservative-led government expects to collect 2.65 billion euros form the new tax to apply from January 1, 2014.
