Still no word from Greek sailor kidnapped in Gulf of Guinea

The kidnappers of a Greek sailor who was abducted from an oil tanker in the Gulf of Guinea on December 17 had not made contact by Friday with the shipping company he worked for to demand a ransom.

Foreign Ministry sources said that the sailor in question is a retired 65-year-old seaman.

He was abducted along with the Ukrainian captain of the Marshall Islands-flagged Althea while the ship was docked at the Odudu oil and gas terminal.

Diplomatic sources said there has been an increase in the number of abductions of foreign sailors recently and that it was clear from the fact that none of the other crew, such as Filipinos, was harmed that the kidnappers raided the ship with the aim of finding Western seamen that could command decent ransoms.
