Man, thought to be Iranian migrant, dies after self-immolation in central Athens
A man died in central Athens early on Saturday morning after setting himself on fire.
He poured a flammable liquid over himself on the corner of Aghiou Meletiou and Acharnon Street and then set fire to himself at around 6.45 a.m.
Witnesses called authorities but the man was pronounced dead on arrival at Erythros Stavros Hospital.
A wallet was found near the spot where the man self-immolated. It contained the details of a 28-year-old Iranian migrant. Authorities believe it is likely this was the man who killed himself.
