Renowned artist Chryssa laid to rest in Athens

Renowned artist Chryssa, known best for her minimalist neon and metal sculptures, was laid to rest at Athens First Cemetery on Tuesday. She died in the early hours of Monday at the age of 80.

A descendant of the famous Mavromichali family from Mani that fought Ottoman rule, Chryssa Vardea was born in Athens in 1933 and studied art at the Grande Chaumiere academy in Paris and later at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California. She moved to New York in 1957, where she spent most of her career, creating the signature sculptures that today grace the courtyard of the Athens Concert Hall, the Evangelismos metro station in Athens and other public spaces.

Her pioneering work in light art and luminist sculpture has been shown at leading galleries and museums around the world, including the Guggenheim in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and the Galleries Denise Rene in Dusseldorf and Paris. Her work is also part of the Rockefeller Collection.
