Municipal workers protest at central Athens court complex

The union representing municipal workers (POE-OTA) went on a work stoppage on Friday so that members of the union can attend a protest rally at the central Athens court complex where the union’s general council is to go on trial.

The stoppage began at 11 a.m. ahead of the noon gathering at the court where 35 unionists are to stand trial in connection with extended strike action in October 2011 to protest cutbacks introduced by the government.

In a statement, the union urged workers to attend the rally so as to “send a strong message of resistance against those who are trying to terrify and intimidate them.”
