Mild quake jolts central Greece
A moderate earthquake measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale shook central Greece on Saturday morning, with its epicenter some 23 kilometers to the west of Atalanti, near Lamia.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the quake took place at 10.14 a.m. and struck eight kilometers north of of the village of Elatia. It was also felt in the capital.
Geology professor Efthymios Lekkas told Hellenic Public Television that the tremor occurred at a depth of just two kilometers below the surface but had little impact because it was rather mild.
He associated Saturday’s quake with another one in the region last August, and made it clear it had not relation whatsoever with the ongoing earthquake activity in Cephalonia, that produced a damaging tremor measuring 5.8R last Sunday.
