Migrant drowns trying to reach Rhodes, seven rescued

An irregular immigrant, thought to be from Syria, was found drowned off the island of Rhodes early on Monday.

A coast guard patrol boat picked up his body after residents notified them that several people were in the water. Officers rescued six men and one woman, who said they had been forced to jump in the sea by trafficker who brought them over from Turkey.

The seven managed to swim to the shore but the eighth drowned trying to make it to safety. The surviving migrants have been taken to the port authority on Rhodes.
