Armed forces to provide emergency relief on quake-stricken Cephalonia

The Greek armed forces are to implement an emergency plan reserved for natural disasters after a second large earthquake struck the Ionian island of Cephalonia on Monday.

The Defkalion plan is being put into action after further damage on the island from the 5.7 Richter quake. At least 16 people were injured on Monday morning.

A navy frigate is to transport machinery to the island, while an air force plane will fly a team of government officials to Cephalonia.

Two navy ships, the Prometheus and Chios, sailed for Cephalonia on Saturday to transport medicines and basic goods to the Ionian island, which was rocked by an earthquake last Sunday.

Six doctors were also on board the ships.

The Chios can accommodate 250 people if needed.
