New Greek party to be called Union for the Homeland and the People

Former New Democracy MPs Vyron Polydoras and Christos Zois officially founded a new right-wing party on Wednesday.

Led by Polydoras, a former public order minister, the new group will be called Union for the Homeland and the People.

The two hitherto independent parliamentarians submitted the necessary paperwork to the Supreme Court Wednesday and are due to make an official announcement at noon Thursday.

Zois has been out of the New Democracy ranks since February 2012, when he voted against Greece’s second bailout.

He then joined Panos Kammenos’s Independent Greeks but left the party in December of the same year. In March 2013, he formed his own party, Nea Mera (New Day).

Nea Mera will continue to exist but within the framework of the new party led by Polydoras.
