Dispute breaks out in ND over regional governor candidate

A dispute appeared to have broken out on Friday between two members of conservative New Democracy over the candidacy for regional governor of Central Macedonia in the forthcoming May elections.

The incumbent Apostolos Tzitzicostas repeated on Friday that he would stand in the elections despite an earlier announcement by ND that the conservative MP Yiannis Ioannidis would stand for that post on ND’s ticket. ND had been planning to back Tzitzicostas as a candidate for Thessaloniki Mayor, according to sources.

“The preelection struggle has begun,” Tzitzicostas told reporters. “I hope all the candidates in our region will give an honorable and civilized contest, for the good of the citizens of central Macedonia,” he said.

A few hours earlier, Ioannidis said that his goal was to highlight and tackle the “real problems” faced by citizens in the region “beyond the narrow confines of party politics.”
