Oropos mayor, eight others to face prosecutor over torched toll booth
The mayor of the eastern Attica town of Oropos, Yiannis Oikonomakos, two of his deputies and another six people are to face a prosecutor on Tuesday after being detained in connection with a protest at the Malakasa toll station that led to a toll booth being destroyed.
The protest was held on Sunday in reaction to rate hikes at the Malakasa toll post, which is a key entry and exit point for Oropos.
Some 500 people responded to a call by the Oropos Municipality to protest the hike, which resulted in a toll booth being knocked over and set alight.
Police are examining CCTV footage to ascertain whether the suspects were involved in the vandalism.
