‘Group of Popular Rebels’ claims responsibility for attack on German ambassador’s residence

A group calling itself the “Group of Popular Rebels” on Tuesday claimed responsibility for an attack in December on the residence of German Ambassador to Athens Wolfgang Dold in Halandri, northeast of Athens.

The group sent a letter to weekly To Pontiki claiming the attack against the envoy’s home, which was riddled with some 20 bullets from an AK47 assault rifle in the early hours of December 30, was part of the “revolutionary project” sparked in response to the crisis.

No one was injured in the attack.

The same group had also claimed responsibility for an gun attack against the Athens headquarters of ruling New Democracy party in January last year.

The proclamation sent to To Pontiki said the group dedicates the attack on Dold’s residence to a man who committed suicide in front of Parliament in April 2012 after leaving a note blaming the crisis for his decision.
