Number of uninsured cars on Greek roads put at 730,000

Some 730,000 uninsured vehicles are circulating in Greece, according to Dimitris Zorbas, head of the Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies’ Motor Committee.

Speaking on local radio on Thursday, Zorbas said the figure was based on data compiled by cross-checking information from insurance companies’ database systems as well as the Finance Ministry’s Road Tax Department and the Transport Ministry’s car permits registry.

Owners of uninsured cars will receive official notification from the Finance Ministry, said Zorbas, who added that car insurance rates had dropped 15 percent last year and were expected to go down another 8 percent this year.
