Megara toll protesters, including mayor, cleared

A court on Wednesday cleared seven protesters who were arrested on Sunday during a protest at the Pachi toll station in Megara, west of Athens, including Megara Mayor Yiannis Marinakis.

The protesters faced charges of obstructing public transport but were acquitted after the court noted that the traffic police had been informed about the gathering four days in advance and that the mayor and local chief of police had communicated at the scene.

The protesters were demonstrating against the recent rise in toll charges announced by the government.

The trial was attended by several witnesses including residents of Megara and nearby areas and local authority officials.
