Six suspects charged with trying to murder journalist Vaxevanis

Six men were charged on Thursday with forming a criminal gang that allegedly attempted to blackmail and then murder investigative journalist Costas Vaxevanis in 2012.

Vaxevanis, who also publishes Hot Doc magazine, alleges that on September 9 two years ago, five people attempted to ambush him as he returned home at night. The journalist told authorities he sensed their presence and called the police.

One of the suspects is alleged to be an agent with the National Intelligence Service (EYP). The six are also accused of forging documents to make it appear Vaxevanis was in EYP’s pay. The incidents allegedly took place before Hot Doc published the names on the Lagarde list of depositors.
