Rare Battle of Navarino manuscript up for auction in Athens
An unpublished manuscript detailing the events of the October 2, 1827 Battle of Navarino off the southwestern coast of the Peloponnese during the Greek War of Independence is going up for auction in Athens on Monday, March 17, at the Athens Plaza hotel on Syntagma Square.
The manuscript was written by an officer of the French Navy, which allied with the British and the Russians to destroy an Ottoman armada in one of history’s most recounted naval battles.
The starting bid for the manuscript, which is unsigned but contains vivid details about the brutality of the battle, is set at between 4,000-6,000 euros.
The auction by will begin at 6 p.m. and includes 472 lots comprising rare books, manuscripts, documents, etchings and photographs, the latter including work by Albert Meyer, William Stillman and Nelly’s.
The lots are on display through March 15 at the Vergos auctioneers (1st floor 10 Neofytou Douka, Kolonaki) daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
