Roma couple in pretrial custody on abduction charges

A Roma man and woman, aged 59 and 58, were remanded in pretrial custody on Tuesday by a prosecutor in Katerini, northern Greece, on charges of child abduction and document fraud, after DNA tests failed to show a match between then and a 10-month-old baby they claimed was theirs.

After their initial arrest, the couple confessed that they were not the biological parents of the baby, but said that it had been given to them by a 41-year-old Roma woman from Farsala, central Greece, who is currently also facing charges over the case of “Maria,” a young girl found in her care who was originally falsely believed to have been a victim of abduction.
