Court hands life sentence to 58-year-old woman for 2009 murder

A court in Amaliadia in Western Greece, on Thursday sentenced a 58-year-old woman to life over the murder of a 42-year-old businessman in Diakopto in the prefecture of Achaia in 2009, the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency (AMNA) reported.

The woman also faces an additional 3.5-years for forgery and illegal possession of a weapon, according to the AMNA.

The 48-year-old man’s body was discovered by police in June 2010, buried in the basement of his home, which he shared with the 58-year-old woman at the time of his murder, believed to have taken place in May the previous year.

The 58-year-old woman pleaded not guilty to the murder, saying that the man was killed by her partner, who has since passed away.

The court rejected the suggestion that anyone else was involved and said that there was no evidence of extenuating circumstances to reduce the life sentence.

The exact circumstances of the murder were not made clear.
