Education minister concludes meeting with teachers in mobility scheme

A meeting between Education Minister Constantinos Arvanitopoulos and schoolteachers enrolled in a mobility scheme involving forced transfers and layoffs was concluded on Friday afternoon.

According to Themis Kotsifakis, head of the Federation of Secondary School Teachers (OLME), the minister is expected to meet with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras on Monday to ask that an announcement regarding 200 available positions in Greek educational facilities, including vocational training institutes, be brought forward.

A first meeting between the minister and the teachers came to an abrupt end on Thursday evening when Arvanitopoulos left the ministry to attend a parliamentary vote.

A group of about 30 teachers refused to vacate the premises and were subsequently forced to leave following police intervention.

On Friday, teachers gathered outside the ministry in Maroussi, northern Athens, to protest government policies.
