Golden Dawn ejects MP from parliamentary group

Ultranationalist party Golden Dawn on Tuesday announced its decision to expel MP Stathis Boukouras from its parliamentary group, bringing the number of seats it holds in the House down from 18 to 16 if he does not formally resign and cede his seat to another candidate.

The decision comes after the effective resignation over the weekend of Chrysovalantis Alexopoulos, who said that he would be standing as an independent after expressing surprise at revelations regarding Golden Dawn’s “activities, which have been defined as criminal.”

Golden Dawn’s decision came after Boukouras had suggested on Monday that he was considering resigning from the party, which is currently under criminal investigation with one-third of its MPs, including Boukouras and leader Nikos Michaloliakos, in pre-trial custody.
