Teachers strike over pending layoffs in their sector

Secondary school teachers protesting planned layoffs in the public sector, as part of a civil service overhaul pledged to the troika, walked off the job on Friday.

The teachers launched their protest on Thursday to mark the expiry of an eight-month period during which they had been in a so-called mobility scheme. They now face transfer to another position or dismissal from the civil service.

Protesters were to stage a rally in central Klafthmonos Square before marching to the Education Ministry in the early afternoon.

Protesting teachers on Thursday occupied the political office of Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Pangrati for several hours. The sitin was broken up late on Thursday night following the intervention of police and a prosecutor.
