Education Minister says will try to avert teacher layoffs

Education Minster Constantinos Arvanitopoulos said on Friday that the government would do everything to ensure there are no layoffs of teachers at state schools, adding however that his hands were largely tied due to «commitments made in the past to the troika.”

In comments to ANT1 television channel, Arvanitopoulos said that 1,600 of the 1,850 teachers who have been put in a mobility scheme would be transferred to other posts rather than being dismissed.

Secondary school teachers walked off the job on Friday to protest the mobility scheme and express their opposition to an evaluation process demanded by the troika.
