Inmate murders Malandrino deputy warden

The deputy warden of Malandrino Prison in central Greece was murdered on Tuesday by an inmate who used a makeshift knife to slice his victim’s throat.

Authorities said the 46-year-old prison guard, a father of two, died as he was being taken to the hospital. His windpipe had been severed in the attack, which was carried out by an Albanian inmate.

Police believe that the prisoner held the deputy warden responsible for his bid for furlough being turned down. There had been an increased police presence around the prison over the past few days due to suspicions that an uprising was being planned in protest at the government’s plans to turn Malandrino into a maximum-security facility.
