Probe launched into journalists’ child benefit payments

First instance prosecutor Panagiota Fakou launched a preliminary investigation on Thursday into reports that dozens of retired journalists, including the deputy president of the National Council for Radio and Television, Lina Alexiou, received child benefits for many years after their children had become adults.

The case was reported in Real News on Sunday and drew attention as Alexiou is the mother of SYRIZA MP Zoe Constantopoulou (photo).

The lawmaker said that her mother had been unaware she was still receiving the benefit until late last year when her social security fund wrote to her and about 400 other journalists to inform them of the error.
