New Democracy MP fires driver over Nazi salute
New Democracy lawmaker Yiannis Tragakis, who is also a deputy parliamentary speaker, has fired his driver after a photograph of the man performing a Nazi salute was made public.
Tragakis announced that Stelios Gialelis was being removed from his post but insisted that the driver was not a member of neofascist Golden Dawn. The lawmaker attributed Gialelis’s behavior to the company that he keeps.
The publication of the photo prompted a sarcastic response from Golden Dawn spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris, who called for New Democracy to be deemed a criminal organization.
This is the charge that has been levelled at Golden Dawn and its MPs. Parliament voted on Thursday to lift the immunity of Neo-Nazi lawmaker Giorgios Germenis, who is already in pre-trial custody.
