Man admits to family murders in Ioannina

A man suspected of murdering his mother and grandmother in Ioannina last Friday confessed to the crime after turning himself in at an Athens police station. Constantine Mitsaris, 21, yesterday admitted killing Olga Papageorgiou, 85, and her daughter Chrysavgi, 55, who were found stabbed to death in their Ioannina home on Sunday. Shortly after their bodies were discovered, Mitsaris went to the police station in Ilioupolis, Athens, at the urging of a family friend. Initially, he said that he had found the bodies but had kept quiet for fear of blame. But later he admitted that during a visit on Friday, a row broke out when his mother blamed his late father for their divorce. Mitsaris said he used an army knife to attack his mother, whose body bore 30 stab wounds, and then his grandmother. Police say Mitsaris was upset by the death last October of his father, with whom he had been living.
