Time to end public sector jobs for life, says minister
Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis suggested on Wednesday that the government could soon begin examining plans to end jobs for life in the public sector.
At the moment, civil servants can only be fired for disciplinary reasons or if their positions are scrapped, but Mitsotakis told Vima FM that it was time to end jobs for life as a whole.
“Society is mature enough to discuss this,” he said, adding that the government was looking at whether this should apply to new hires or existing civil servants as well.
He said that legislation already exists that means new public sector workers are hired on a two-year trial basis but that this is never enforced.
As for ending jobs for life, he said this would require changes to the Constitution, which will take some time.
