Former deputy for education to stand trial for usury

Former Deputy Education Minister Yiannis Anthopoulos is to stand trial for usury, it emerged on Thursday.

Anthopoulos was part of the PASOK government between 1993 and 2000. He also served as deputy economy minister. The charges relate to his actions as a lawyer.

Anthopoulos is accused of forcing one of his clients, who was involved in the tobacco trade, to pay him an extremely high interest rate on a loan he provided.

According to the case file, a probe revealed 700,000 euros in one of his bank accounts that he was not able to legally justify.

Anthopoulos’s client and her daughter are also being charged with fraud.
