Homemade bomb targets car of deputy speaker’s wife [update]

A homemade explosive device planted under a car belonging to the wife of Deputy Parliament Speaker Giorgos Kalantzis detonated early on Thursday outside the couple’s home in Kavala, northern Greece, causing serious damage to the vehicle but no injuries.

The car had been parked outside the couple’s home at the time of the blast, according to police who said the device, which comprised gas canisters, was virtually identical to one used in an explosion outside a regional authority office in Kavala last year.

There had been no claim of responsibility for Thursday’s blast at the time of publication.
