Speaker tells Golden Dawn investigators Parliament going as fast as it can

Parliament Speaker Evangelos Meimarakis on Wednesday sought to reassure the two magistrates leading a criminal investigation into the neofascist Golden Dawn that the House is not dragging its feet over their request to lift the immunity from prosecution of another three lawmakers but following time-consuming procedures.

In a written response to prosecutors Ioanna Klappa and Maria Dimitropoulou, Meimarakis noted, “As you know, the request relates to a large number of MPs while the parliamentary procedure involves several stages.”

Responding to the magistrates’ assertion that the immunity debate will likely take place after European and municipal elections at the end of next month, Meimarakis noted that it was normal for Parliament to break ahead of elections.

Of Golden Dawn’s 16 MPs, 13 face prosecution on charges of setting up a criminal investigation. Six of the 13 are in jail, including party leader Nikos Michaloliakos.
