Greek man returning from Persian Gulf cleared for MERS

A Greek man who returned to Athens from the Persian Gulf tested negative for the rare and deadly respiratory disease MERS, which has killed dozens of people in Saudi Arabia.

The 70-year-old was being treated in a negative pressure room at Sotiria Hospital in Athens.

Authorities said they have also tested two other people who had MERS-like symptoms but both cases were negative.

The only confirmed case of the SARS-like coronavirus that emerged in Saudi Arabia two years ago is a 69-year-old man who has been in the hospital for almost two weeks.

He contracted the virus in Saudi Arabia, where he had been working.

None of those who came into contact with him in Greece tested positive for MERS.
