Suspect in policeman’s killing to testify on Thursday

A 30-year-old man who has allegedly confessed to killing a 35-year-old off-duty police officer in Ileia in the Peloponnese on Sunday has been given until Thursday to prepare his testimony for the prosecutor investigating the case.

According to reports, the 35-year-old victim, a father of two, was walking home with a friend when he saw the suspect trying to break into his friend and neighbor’s home on Sunday evening.

The two men, both 35, tried to stop the assailant, who allegedly attacked them with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries on the police officer.

The suspect was apprehended several hours later at a Roma camp in the vicinity, where he is said to have been seen wearing clothes covered in blood.

Flags at police stations across the country flew at half-mast on Tuesday in a sign of mourning for the victim.
