Piraeus mayor alleges intimidation in bitter battle for port city

Piraeus Mayor Vassilis Michaloliakos claims he received threats to his life on Sunday, when he was left in second place during the first round of voting in local elections.

Michaloliakos earned 31.3 percent of the vote with almost all ballots counted. The winner was Yiannis Moralis, an independent. The incumbent mayor, a New Democracy candidate, called on the government to protect him from intimidation.

Moralis, an Olympiakos soccer club official backed by the club’s chairman Vangelis Moralis, denied that he or his supporters were involved in any attacks on Michaloliakos.

The Piraeus mayor called on leftist parties to support him in the second round of what has turned into a very bitter battle for control of the port city.
