Venizelos condemns attack on Thessaloniki’s Jewish Cemetery

Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos on Friday condemned the vandalism of Thessaloniki’s Jewish Cemetery.

Vandals broke into the cemetery in the Stavroupoli area of the northern port city on Thursday morning and damaged graves and headstones.

“I condemn in the strongest manner the desecration of the Jewish Cemetery in Thessaloniki,” he said, adding that authorities would do their utmost to catch those responsible for this “unprovoked act of anti-Semitism.”

Earlier, the head of the local Jewish community had expressed his exasperation about the attack.

“It is distressing for a cemetery to be desecrated in this way,” David Saltiel told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. “We are unimaginably saddened by this event.”
