Mental health fraud of some 30 mln euros uncovered
Some 30 million euros has been saved, the government said on Wednesday, thanks to a clampdown on what appear to be cases of fraud at state-funded mental health clinics.
Deputy Health Minister Zeta Makri said checks revealed that 34.6 percent of the 37,154 people who were registered as receiving treatment at the clinics between July 2013 and April 2014 were not in fact doing so. Makri said that in some cases the social security numbers registered corresponded to patients that had died. She added that in a number of instances the patients had been registered for treatment after they had died.
Makri indicated that the government would take legal action to recover any funding that was wrongfully claimed by the clinics.
