Man cleared of robbery after 3.5 years in jail

A 25-year-old man who has served three-and-a-half years in jail for a robbery at the AHEPA Hospital in Thessaloniki in 2010 was cleared by an appeals court in the northern port city on Friday.

Babis Tsilianidis, a 25-year-old self-styled anarchist, was convicted of stealing 8,000 euros from the hospital’s accounts department. He was found guilty after his DNA was discovered on a bandana that was dropped near the hospital. No witnesses identified Tsilianidis as being at the scene and he argued that the DNA sample was contaminated.

Tsilianidis has been convicted on two other occasions, for an arson attack on vehicles belonging to OTE telecom and being part of a gang.
