Paralympic hand cyclist dies in Crete hospital from crash injuries
Paralympic hand cyclist Giorgos Sifakis died on Sunday in a hospital in Crete after suffering extensive injuries in a road accident in May. He was 40 years old.
The athlete was training for a race on a stretch of highway outside Iraklio on the southern Aegean island on May 16 when he was hit by on oncoming car, suffering multiple injuries.
Sifakis, a native of Crete, underwent several rounds of surgery at the general hospital of Iraklio before succumbing to his injuries on Sunday.
The athlete was confined to a wheelchair 17 years ago after a motorcycle accident resulted in partial paralysis.
His death comes a day after he was due to compete in the Keri Mountain Bike Trophy in Crete.
