GD MP Nikos Kouzilos put in pretrial detention

Another Golden Dawn deputy was remanded in custody Tuesday on charges of setting up and directing a criminal organization.

Magistrates Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou placed Nikos Kouzilos, who denies the charges, in pretrial detention after more than six hours of questioning on grounds that he may commit new crimes.

The decision was made in agreement with prosecutor Isidoros Dogiakos and was based on evidence that Kouzilos took part in the January attack against Resalto, a leftist, anti-establishment hangout in the Piraeus suburb of Keratsini near the spot where rapper Pavlos Fyssas was stabbed to death by Golden Dawn member Giorgos Roupakias in September last year. The ruling was slammed by GD spokesman Ilias Kasidiaris as a group of supporters gathered outside the court.

“One more deputy has been jailed without evidence. This is a judicial crime. The junta of [Evangelos] Venizelos and [Antonis] Samaras has not been able to stop Golden Dawn,” Kasidiaris said.

“This is a crime against popular rule, against the third party in Parliament,” he said.

GD lawmaker Eleni Zaroulia, wife of jailed leader Nikos Michaloliakos, will face prosecutors tomorrow, while MP Michalis Arvanitis is expected to testify on Friday. They both faces charges of forming and running a criminal gang.
