Illegal employment office fleeced job seekers in Hania

A 64-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were arrested in Hania, Crete, on Thursday for setting up an illegal employment bureau.

The pair allegedly demanded a month’s worth of wages from applicants who they helped find work.

A total of 1,720 people are believed to have used the bureau’s services, agreeing to pay half of the wages they earned in the first two months at any job secured for them by the two suspects.

In order to ensure that he would receive the commission, the 64-year-old kept the identity cards of any applicants.
