Ex-MP, journalist Aris Stathakis, 71, dies

Former MP and journalist Aris Stathakis has died at the age of 71. Stathakis worked at a number of media but is best known for his work in the world of motor sports.

He was editor of 4-Trohoi (4-Wheels), Greece’s prime car magazine, between 1970 and 1974, and presented a car show on ANT1 TV during the 1990s. He also provided commentary on Formula 1 races.

Stathakis earned the Botsis Foundation’s prize for journalism in 1992 and more recently served on the National Road Safety Committee.

He was elected as municipal councilor in Athens in 1998 and 2003 and a lawmaker in 2004 on New Democracy’s ticket.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras expressed his “deepest grief” at Stathakis’s death, saying that the journalist had also been a personal friend. “He is an example of public service, high morals and dignity,” said Samaras.
