GD deputy released on no ‘hate speech’ condition

Golden Dawn MP Michalis Arvanitis was released by magistrates on Friday on the condition that he does not engage in any hate speech.

He is the first of the far-right party’s lawmakers to be granted this form of conditional release.

Investigating magistrates Ioanna Klapa and Maria Dimitropoulou said Arvanitis could speak at Golden Dawn events but, citing some of the lawmaker’s previous public appearances, added he would be remanded in custody if he engages in hate speech or praises Nazi ideology.

Earlier this week, another of the party’s MPs, Dimitris Koukoutsis, was placed under house arrest.

Golden Dawn leader Nikos Michaloliakos’s wife, Eleni Zaroulia, is due to face magistrates on Tuesday.
