Music teacher who murdered wife has life sentence reduced

A 42-year-old music teacher who murdered his wife and then buried her in an Athens park almost six years ago has had his life sentence reduced.

An appeals court ruled late on Friday that the man should serve a maximum of 20 years in prison for the crime. The judges arrived at their decision after acknowledging that the man had not been in trouble with authorities before murdering his wife.

The 42-year-old claimed that he hit his wife with an iron bar and then punched her after she threatened to attack him with a knife. He then buried her body in Pikioni Park in Filothei, northern Athens.

The public prosecutor rejected this version of events, arguing that the music teacher murdered his wife while she was sleeping.
