Albanian remanded in custody in heroin smuggling case

A 29-year-old Albanian national arrested in a case involving over 1.3 ton of heroin seized by authorities in Attica last week was remanded in custody on Friday.

The suspect, who surrendered to police last week, was expected to be transferred to Halkida Prison later in the day.

According to the case file, the 29-year-old opened the garage door of a residence in Filothei, northern Athens, to a luxury vehicle transporting a portion of the drug prior to a police operation which led to the rest of 11 people, including a 40-year-old ship owner and his ex-wife, both of whom are currently in pre-trial custody.

Police believe the heroin came from Iran and was destined for Belgium and Germany. The drug’s street value was estimated at around 30 million euros.
