Policeman charged for embezzling funds from his own department

A police officer has been suspended and was facing felony charges this weekend for allegedly embezzling over 300,000 euros from his own department.

According to the case file, authorities believe the officer, who was in charge of the cafeteria at Athens Police Headquarters, embezzled the cash over a period of five years.

The case is being investigated by the Greek Police’s internal affairs department following a raid on the suspect’s office and residence from where law enforcement agents retrieved invoices, receipts and other evidence connected to the investigation.

Meanwhile, sources suggested that more officers could be involved in the scam.
