EU better equipped to face crises if they happen, Samaras tells European Parliament
The European Union is now better equipped and better prepared to face crises if they happen compared to 2010, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras told a plenary European Parliament session in Strasbourg on Wednesday in his opening remarks regarding the conclusion of Greece’s six-month rotating presidency.
On the subject of the Greek sovereign crisis, the Greek premier noted that two years ago his principal concern had been to “save the country” and that following major reforms the country had put an end to a six-year recession period. “We succeeded thanks to the decisiveness of the Greek government and the sacrifices of the Greek people” he said.
Responding to questions posed by extreme right European Parliament deputies regarding charges brought against Golden Dawn lawmakers, Samaras said that the latter were being prosecuted over their alleged crimes, not because of their beliefs.
Italian premier Matteo Renzi was expected to lay out his country’s presidency program later on Wednesday.
